The Lenten Desert

“It is through temptation and its strain that the depths of character are revealed.” – Fulton Sheen

Hours pass slowly in the heat as the sun makes its lazy arc across the sky. The air gets cold at night and billions of stars dance and swirl in the heavens. Voices in the wind seem to know every secret I keep. On the edge of sleep, I wonder if anything is true. Days pass. I persevere and God provides a way. Finally, distant echoes of incarnation and resurrection touch my open senses in this remote outpost where errors are as clear as the light. Faith is bread in the wilderness. Hope is a hidden spring in the cleft of a rock. Despite the hardships, Love is the final word.
