Strange Mercy

(Ash Wednesday)

The God of atoms, time, DNA, quarks, and the cosmos is amazing indeed, but we need something more intimate. In Judeo-Christian salvation history, God is with us and for us, and even becomes one of us. That is amazingly good news for everyone real enough to recognize their actual situation as a human being. If you’re Christian, the Resurrection pretty much puts all questions of existence in proper perspective; the answer is given before the question even forms.

So here it is, too good not to be true, the appalling strangeness of the mercy of God and the love from which it springs,…theĀ source of all things. Such love cannot stay imprisoned in a cold tomb for very long.
