We thought it was over. We said, “Never again!” Did it ever go away? It is a sleeping dragon in us and among us, always waiting to return.
There it is; hidden in the charity of thoughtless evangelization, in the nationalism thinly disguised as patriotism, in the thousand deadly paper cuts of impersonal bureaucracy, and in the heated rhetoric of the fearful. (Good people who want good things do awful things when they are afraid and can’t see the forest for the trees.)
