When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” (Mark 3:21)
Love makes you crazy. This can be good or bad. Jesus was crazy and annoying. He embarrassed his family in public. He associated with the dregs of society. He upset social norms and opposed established rules of etiquette. In fact, Jesus was so crazy and irritating they finally killed him.
According to accepted Christology, he is the manifestation of God in human form. This means God is so crazy and annoying and inappropriate, we want to kill him. Accepted theology also says God is Love. This means Love is so crazy and annoying and inappropriate, we want to kill it.
If all of this is correct, it is very disturbing. It means God’s kind of crazy provokes and accepts the worst in us to ultimately give us what is best for us. Our kind of crazy (which we think is sane) refuses to have any of it.
