After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. (Matthew 2:1-3)
The Magi were able to read the patterns in nature and discern God’s presence and plan. Not many of us understand the natural world anymore. We also fail to understand our own inner lives. We thus miss seeing God’s presence and plan in us and around us. We walk around blind and disturbed, like Herod.
Eventually, our ignorance and abuse of nature will be our downfall, but before that, a death of the spirit will come. It has already begun while we are enslaved and impoverished by the technology we developed to help us.
The Magi are called wise. Indeed, to discern God’s presence and plan in nature is wise. The natural world can tell us everything we need to know if we don’t destroy it first. Where are today’s Magi? We have plenty of Herods.
