I hear complaints during the Christmas season that Christmas is too busy, too secular, too commercial, etc. These complaints point to something deeper. The problem is Christmas has lost its shock value. We overlook the shocking and disturbing truth Christmas reveals about each person’s place in the world.
The core truth about human nature is we are made for communion and connection with God and with one another. God is not a concept or a psychosis. God is a person. The most real thing about you is that you are loved by the one thing necessary. You matter. Everybody matters.
The virgin birth and the divinity of Christ are difficult to believe but are easier for some to believe than what they indicate. The Christian mysteries point to your own significance. Most of us find this hard or impossible to believe. Christmas says this: You are God’s own beloved, the God-bearer, and the temple dwelling of the uncontrollable mystery. So is every person; even your enemies. Christmas says this is who you are, this is your place in the scheme of things, and this is the shocking good news of Christmas.
