Slight gestures of dissent: being quiet, reading a book, moments of solitude, the joy of family life, prayer, loving selflessly, creativity, appreciating the good, the true, and the beautiful…a deep inner life…all of these are hidden explosives in the marketplace that resist the relentless assaults on being truly human. Yet even these slight gestures of dissent are difficult to perform consistently.

Too often we struggle against powers that dissuade us from engaging in saner pursuits. Obligations and distractions and demands always threaten to misdirect our energies. Still, the true focus and grounding in reality for every human person remains inward, and should always result in loving. If we are blessed, we will find ways to live according to this.

Prayer: God, help me to engage in slight gestures of dissent and to thereby remain human.

“We must regain sight of the transcendent horizon of possibility to which the soul of humanity aspires.” – St. John Paul II

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” – Socrates
