Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying “Lord save us! We are going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. (Matthew 8:23-26)
It is hard to sense God’s presence in the turmoil and chaos in us and around us. The neglected divine aspect of our lives can go to sleep. If we let things go for too long, we are in danger of drowning in the chaotic storm of our misdirected thoughts, feelings, and actions. Sometimes the best we can do when the ocean of our lives gets stirred up is hold on tight and cry out for help.
We all know that the storms of life are frightening and are not our intended state of being. The good news is we can know peace again and, with God’s help we can master the storms we encounter in life. We can regain our faith in the goodness of life and the love of God. Please do not give up or allow yourself to be caught up in the chaos in you and around you. God’s plans for us are peace and not disaster; rest and not turmoil; joy and not despair.
