A Lenten Reflection

Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. (Deuteronomy 30:19)

From Michael Casey, O.C.S.O: “Eternal life begins here on earth…alienation from God also begins here. The choice is ours, expressed not only by an inner act of good intention but also by the way we consistently live.”

The light came into the world and people loved darkness rather than light. (John 3:19)

Some of us imagine a Final Judgment in terms of a great cosmic drama. Judgment is already happening on a daily basis as we choose, one way or another, how to live.

It is not so much that God rejects us, as that we spurn the gift of life that God offers us. -Casey

The Kingdom of God, the ultimate reality of God’s personal presence, is “at hand” here and now, not “someday”. Will I meet it today with acceptance, rejection, delay, or indifference? What does my choice say about my life?
