They begged him that they might touch only the tassel of his cloak,

and as many as touched it were healed.

(Mark 6:56)

Human illness goes much deeper than the physical. When illness strikes the seat of the soul one is truly in need of healing and only God’s touch can help.

The tassel on Jesus’ cloak here refers to a prayer shawl. Prayer is the point of personal contact between a person and God. This is the holy ground where healing begins. Reaching out to touch God in the sacred space of prayer can heal the deepest aspect of a person.

When we reach out to God for healing the body may remain ill and may even die, but the authentic self (the soul) is healed and given a new life that does not die.

Healing of the soul is the most essential form of healing.

Prayer: Lord, heal me in the places where I need it most.

  1. Such a beautiful example of the creative power of living the promises of the gospel. Faith activates the flow of those promises in the believer, and trusting this seems to bring it to life and open us to the graces of God.
