A Clash of Wills

“Obedience is better than sacrifice.” (1 Samuel 15:22)

It is easier to write a check or to follow a few rules than it is to actually do the hard work of seeing myself clearly and loving others, all others. Obedience to God’s will opposes my will, therefore, it is frightening and burdensome to me. From my perspective, God can seem like a tyrant, even evil. Knowing God’s will is often next to impossible through the layers of falsehood I’ve allowed to accumulate in me and around me. Divine will and my will do not co-exist harmoniously. I need God’s mercy and grace. All I can do is pray: your will be done, not mine.

Being Christian isn’t just following commandments…it is letting God take possession of your life to change it.” – Pope Francis
